Being chiropractors, with a family practice
focus, we have seen the devastating effects of subluxation. Spinal
Subluxation is a term describing nerve irritation due to vertebra being
out of place; this was a big concern for us. Subluxations happen as a
result of many things, the birth process, an un-supported head, a fall
should the baby be accidentally dropped.
An unsupported infant has the tendency to have
its neck and spine counter-rotated while breast feeding in the side
lying position. The periodical “JAMA” the Journal of the American
Medical Association determined in post-mortem studies of infants
that subluxation of C2, the second vertebral segment of the spine, is
evident in 98% of all “SIDS” (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) cases.
Additionally, the side lying position is a prudent sleeping position,
reducing significantly the possibility of aspiration should a baby spit
up. Keeping the baby properly supported during nursing is very
important as it reduces the risk of spinal subluxation (particularly) in
the neck.
Dr. Bartner and Dr. Otten recommend every family
have a chiropractor as part of their health care team. Infants should
be evaluated after birth and checked periodically to make sure that the
spine stays subluxation free. Research shows that children under
regular chiropractic care have lower incidence of ear infections and a
host of other childhood ailments.
